ARTICLE:
Last week, I learnt of how our colleagues in Chennai and Bangalore banded together to help the family of a colleague.
It is a story of humanity, compassion, generosity and most importantly, a story of incredible perseverance.
A story that touched my heart, redoubled my pride in the people of abc and made me want to share it with all of you.
On a fateful day in Jan 2015, we lost a much-loved and trusted colleague – Mr. Def from the Delta team in a horrifying accident. Mr. Def left behind a grieving family that was hitherto completely dependent on him - his wife, kids and aged parents.
Most people, when confronted with news like this about someone dear to them at work would generally be expected to commiserate, contribute financially to helping the family, then gradually coming to terms with cruel reality that life sometimes imposes on us, and eventually moving on.
But this pattern was not one that an incredible collection of abc employees chose to follow.
With steely-eyed determination, some of our friends at work (whom I will name at the end of this narrative) set about assessing the situation and figuring out how they can truly alleviate the distress of the family of Mr. Def.
Over the course of the next several months, in what can only be described as an act of humanity coupled with perseverance and patience, this group collected information, worked with government agencies, provided counselling help to the bereaved, assessed financial needs of the family and came up with a well thought through plan to deliver the greatest long term impact to all affected folks in the family with the money that was raised.
Compounding this effort was the fact that the family moved to XYZ location in Tamil Nadu, a good 10 hours by road from Chennai.
Undeterred, some members of the team made several trips to the remote location, for document collection, signatures, interfacing with government agencies and other such roadblocks that are an accepted aspect of life in India.
Their efforts also included innumerable visits to banks, post offices and other government offices.
At the end of this effort, the team had successfully deployed the amount that was contributed by various colleagues into a combination of financial instruments that would yield the greatest long term benefit to Mr. Def's family – a combination of high-interest yield post office funds to fixed deposits with varying maturity dates to help with the education needs of Mr. Def's children as well as the needs of his wife and parents.
I have requested the team to write a detailed article/blog-piece on the organized way in which they approached the problem, in the hope that their systematic methods may serve as a template to help others in similar situations all over India.
While celebrating their spirit of service, I would also like to offer our collective gratitude to the following individuals for going beyond the sublime, in their effort to help others in need:
HIJKLMNOP
I hope your week begins on a note of boundless optimism and belief in the essential goodness of life thanks to this uplifting story! Have a great week ahead!
